Things to Do When You are Feeling Overwhelmed

If you find that you get overwhelmed a lot in life, then sometimes it helps to take a step back and simply make sure that you are giving yourself time to breathe. If you don’t, then you may find that things end up piling up on you even more, and this is the last thing you need.

Breathe

One of the first things you need to do is try and breathe deeply. You have probably thought before about how there are different strategies you can use for stress, but ultimately, it just comes down to finding one that works for you. If you can regain some control over the situation, then this will help you considerably. You may also want to make sure that you take five minutes to breathe for around 7 breaths a minute. If you can do this, then you will slow down your heart rate, and it will also help you to feel much calmer. If you struggle with things like panic attacks, then it is a good idea to try and see someone about it. When you do, you can then work with them to try and get your anxiety under control, which will help you a lot. If you struggle with racing thoughts and overwhelm daily, or if you find that you have hyperactivity, then you may want to see someone about getting an ADHD assessment done. It’s now easier than ever to book a private adult ADHD assessment done online.

Work Out and Release Tension

Another thing you need to do is try to work out. Working out is a great form of stress relief, and you may also find that it is great for your mental health. A big misconception is that you need to go to do a workout at a gym but this is not the case at all. In fact, it’s very easy for you to do some yoga at home, or you can even simply go for a walk. Sometimes, gentle exercise like this is a great thing to do, and you may also find that it works wonders for you and your mental health. Reading a book or even trying to watch your favorite series as well as this can help you not only switch off, but also make sure that you are taking steps to make sure that you are helping yourself mentally decompress after physically decompressing.

Speak to Someone

If your feelings of overwhelm are quite strong, then it may benefit you to speak to someone. When you do, you can then count on them to help guide you through the process, and they can also help you to offload your feelings. You don’t have to speak to a professional, as speaking to a friend or even a family member can be a great help as well. Talk about something unrelated to how you are feeling if you are struggling, and then work your way up to the deeper things you may be struggling with.
